NAVIGATING THE BOILER UPGRADE SCHEME

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS), launched in May 2022, is part of the UK government’s plan to decarbonise heating in buildings. It provides upfront grants to incentivise homeowners and businesses in England and Wales to replace old fossil fuel boilers with low-carbon alternatives, such as heat pumps and biomass boilers. This guide helps you understand eligibility, key features, and rules of the scheme so you can take full advantage of its financial and environmental benefits.

WHY UPGRADE YOUR BOILER

Traditional gas and oil boilers contribute significantly to the UK’s carbon footprint. Replacing them with air-source or ground-source heat pumps, or biomass boilers, reduces emissions, lowers energy bills, and future-proofs your home. Low-carbon systems offer efficient and reliable heating while supporting the country’s transition to a sustainable, low-carbon future.

ELIGIBILITY AND GRANT DETAILS

The BUS is open to homeowners and some non-domestic properties in England and Wales. Eligible properties include detached and semi-detached houses, bungalows, flats with separately metered heating, and SMEs with premises under 45kW thermal capacity. Properties already heated by low-carbon systems are excluded, and the scheme is not available in Scotland or Northern Ireland. Grants are available at a flat rate: £7,500 for air and ground source heat pumps, and £5,000 for biomass boilers, covering installations up to 45 kWth (with exceptions for shared ground loop systems).

KEY RULES AND NEXT STEPS

To qualify, the replaced boiler must be permanently removed, and the new system installed by an MCS-accredited installer. Only new installations of ASHPs, GSHPs, or biomass boilers qualify. Biomass boilers have additional restrictions regarding gas grid connection and rural index ratings. The installer applies for the grant on your behalf, and the scheme is scheduled to close for new applications on December 31, 2024. Homeowners should check eligibility, research options, find a qualified MCS installer, obtain quotes, and select the premium system to enjoy energy-efficient, low-carbon heating.
